Twenty-Five

What does it say about my life choices that this wasn’t the first time this month I’d been riding in the back of a van with a supervillain at the wheel?

At least this van had more comfortable bench seating. Rylee sat next to me, and I sat by the cargo door, but I was not comfortable. I was a ball of nerves. We were heading to an area that was close enough for me to make my meeting with the Miracle King if I didn’t spend a lot of time looking for the other Railroad twisted. I’d already mentally plotted the route I could take.

“Your friends?” Rylee asked. “The ones that are counting on you?”

“What about them?”

“Is it a matter of life and death?”

I thought about Sofia, terrified and alone. I thought about the broken body of the tortured Miracle King. “Yeah. Yeah it is.”

She shook her head. “And you chose to help us.” It wasn’t a question, more like surprise.

“I’m with the Guard.” I said it like that should be answer enough. Not that there was much of the Guard left, now.

“I don’t think I could do it. All the life and death choices.” Again she shook her head. “I’d be paryalyzed, afraid that I would choose wrong.”

Yeah, what if? Sofia might not be coming home tonight, or ever. If I’d just concentrated on her could I have gotten any closer? Was I missing out on a lead as I rode around in the back of the van? Nothing I could do about it now. Focus on something else. “You chose to get connected to the Railroad. That couldn’t have been easy.”

Wrong thing to say. She folded her arms and looked away. Her ears twitched and drooped. “It wasn’t a choice. I became a freak.” She held out her hand. The tips were clawed and webbed.

I thought that would end the conversation. I wasn’t going to jump into it, but she continued a second later. “Cutter, Headshot, Clay, even Morgan. They all took new names based on their powers. Like being twisted made them special or something. They even gave me one.”

I remembered Clay had used Sea something, and she hadn’t liked it.

“But why would I change my name based on the worst day of my life?” She growled and ground her shark teeth together, making a fist out of her webbed hand. “A month ago I surged. It was awful. I knew it would be bad. I tried to plan for it. But I didn’t think it would be that bad. I mean, I was a PL2, tops.”

It was rare for a PL2 to become a twisted, but not unheard of. It seemed to happen the most with ferals. Jackal’s new employee Growl, for example.

She shivered at the memory. “I guess I’m more than a two now.”

That isn’t how it works. But I didn’t feel the need to contradict her.

“Some people got hurt. Really hurt.” She looked away. “Hammer showed up and… offered me an option that wasn’t life in prison.
